International Youth Day 2022: An Intergenerational Dialogue on Young People and Consumer Rights

12 August 2022

In collaboration with our Next Generation Leaders Network, today we're celebrating International Youth Day (#IYD2022).

In a rapidly changing world, it is essential that the consumer movement listens to the voices of young people and equips them with the tools they need to champion consumer rights. Not only are the next generation often vulnerable to consumer concerns, but they can be powerful agents of change.

OUR TOOLKIT FOR CHANGE

This year, the theme for IYD 2022 'Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages', amplifies how solidarity across generations is crucial to strengthen effective movements and meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

To build such solidarity within the consumer movement, last week we launched our Next Generation Advocates 'Toolkit for Change' a series of skills-focussed sessions and resources to support and empower the next generation of consumer advocates.

The Toolkit is exclusive to our Next Generation Leaders Network, made up of 30 young and innovative advocates who represent our Members worldwide.

In our first session, public speaking expert and Policy Analyst for the Canadian Government, Maame de Heer, shared lessons on presenting with confidence and clarity. Together, we looked at the power of being prepared and staying true to yourself in unfamiliar settings.

A CONVERSATION WITH YOUNG CONSUMERS

Following our first session, Next Generation Members have been using the lessons learnt in our IYD 2022 video, released today. They speak with Vice President of Consumers International, Gilly Wong, about the main issues affecting younger consumers, from digital rights to sustainable consumption. They highlight the value of the younger voice to our movement and call on others to join us.
