WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2023
EMPOWERING CONSUMERS THROUGH CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITIONS

Every year on March 15, the consumer movement and other influential actors come together to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day to raise global awareness on consumer rights, protection and empowerment. Consumers International is proud to coordinate the day through a multi-stakeholder approach which unites our 200 Members, international organisations, government, business and civil society.

Each year we consult with our members to decide upon a theme. Our consultation resulted in our 2023 theme, Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions. Coming together for change in energy transitions, we will both support consumers through the cost-of-living crisis and help to meet net zero targets by promoting access to sustainable energy globally.

CLEAN ENERGY CONFERENCE: EMPOWERING CONSUMERS THROUGH THE TRANSITION

Last year global energy prices rose by 50%, impacting people everywhere and causing many to drastically change their lifestyles to pay for energy. Indeed, in our global insights survey with Members, 81% reported that consumers are adjusting their budgets so they can pay their energy bills.

Today’s challenge is to help consumers through present difficulties whilst enabling a rapid transition that guarantees sustainability, security, and affordability in the long term. With this in mind, from Monday 13 – Friday 17 March we will bring together leaders from government, business, consumer advocacy and energy experts through a conference exploring the innovation, approach and legislation needed to support consumers. A few select speakers include: Pedro Luiz de Oliveira Jatoba, Chief Generation Officer, Electrobas; Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Consumer Affairs; Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General, World Energy Council; Yetunde Fadeyi, Founder, Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability Initiative for Africa (REES Africa); Hugh Stevenson, Deputy Director, Office of International Affairs, Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Government of the United States; and Rose Mpofu, Executive Director, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe.
