CI is campaigning for consumer protection to be included in a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) being negotiated at the United Nations.
The SDGs will replace the Millennium Development Goals, which have influenced political agendas and millions of dollars of aid spending over the last 15 years.
The SDGs are expected to have the same impact in the years to come.
Consumer protection is important for sustainable development as it supports peoples’ rights in the market place, as well as their access to safe and fair products and services.
As such, consumer protection also supports the implementation of many of the other goals which have already been proposed including poverty elimination, healthy lives, sustainable energy and water, and inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
