A major part of CI's work on sustainable development is ensure the consumer movement's voice is heard at international negotiations.
CI is committed to keeping sustainable consumption at the heart of any deal reached through UN processes. CI is one of the organising partners of the NGO Major Group to the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and participates in the CSD sessions.
CI also attends meetings of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom)for the Earth Summit 2012.
In January 2011, CI attended the High-Level CSD Intersessional Meeting on a 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production in Panama City, Panama. Major groups, member states and UN agencies have the opportnity to discuss potential programmes for the 10YFP on a non-negotiating basis.
In May 2010, CI attended the 18th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18) to ensure that sustainable consumption and consumer issues are given due attention. CI was responsible for input to the NGO Major group on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and spoke on a number of panels.
CI also attended Prepcom1, the first preparatory meeting for the Rio Earth Summit in 2012, which took place immediatedy after CSD-18.
In December 2009, CI attended the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties as an observer organisation.
