About the issue
The impact of consumption on the climate is a big issue for
the consumer movement. Consumers care about the consequences of
their purchasing choices and want the opportunity to reduce their
impact on climate change.
Whilst consumer responsibility is important here, the real
catalyst for change lies with governments and industry. Governments
need to regulate and provide the incentives for businesses to
change, and companies must make genuine efforts to reduce their
impact where it really matters. Given the right tools in this
context, consumers are ready and willing to purchase goods and
services that reduce their contributions to greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions.
This desire amongst consumers to make a positive difference in
borne out in countless studies, not least our own seminal research:
What Assures Consumers on Climate Change.
With recognition of the role of consumers firmly established, and
the changes required from government and industry clearly laid out
in our
policy positions, we are focusing on the fight for meaningful
action through the
international negotiations on climate change.
