Consumer voice to be heard on WTO trade panel for the first time

Pradeep Singh Mehta, Secretary-General of CI member organisation CUTS International, India, has been appointed to the 'WTO Panel on Defining the Future of Trade'.

This is the first time a CI member organisation has sat on a WTO panel looking at trade issues. Pradeep's appointment ensures that consumer protection will be part of the panel's discussions.

The panel was set up in response to the global economic crisis and the profound changes it precipitated in the world economy.

Pradeep and the other 11 panellists will look at the drivers of today and tomorrow's trade, bearing in mind the role of trade in contributing to sustainable development, growth, jobs and poverty alleviation.

The first meeting of the group will be on 16 May in Geneva. The analysis of these world trade drivers will be produced in early 2013.
