As host of the 2005 G8 Summit UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has
placed Africa, along with the issue of climate change, at the top
of the agenda. When the leaders of the G8 countries meet at their
annual summit this 6-8 July in Gleneagles, Scotland, they will be
discussing key issues surrounding Africa's development that have a
direct impact on some of the most vulnerable consumers in the
world, especially the 350 million Africans who live on less than
US$ 1 a day.
Consumers International believes that now is the time for the G8
to stop proposing piecemeal reforms for Africa. At Gleneagles they
must to turn talk into action. The G8 must deliver a comprehensive
package of development activities that will enable African
consumers to enjoy greater access to, and choice of, foods,
medicines, and services.
