Green Action Fund approves 10 projects in developing countries to highlight sustainability

22 Aug 2011

Consumers International has partnered with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) to enable CI members in developing countries to raise awareness about sustainable consumption, with an emphasis on environmental issues.

The Green Action Fund is inspired by SSNC's annual Shop and Act Green Week (Miljövänliga veckan), and has been made possible with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

We received 28 applications for 2011 projects, and 10 CI member organisations have been selected to receive USD3,000 each.

CI's Global Member Services Coordinator, Pat Onoapoi, said about the initiative: "A large number of very strong project proposals were received and coming up with a shortlist of ten was a real challenge! It is very encouraging that so many CI members in developing countries are interested in promoting sustainable consumption, and the Green Action Fund provides a great opportunity for them to raise awareness among consumers on the ground."

The following members had projects approved for funding: DECOM (Mozambique), ECoPA (Ethiopia), KCO (Kenya), CAG (India), CUTS (India), SCA (Malaysia), ASPEC (Peru), ODECU (Chile), FUNDECOM (Dominican Republic), GCA (Guyana).

They will help to raise awareness about sustainable consumption, with an emphasis on environmental issues. Their plans include organising events and information campaigns in retail stores, engaging with the media and the government, publishing and distributing materials, administering advice, setting up workshops and seminars. They will promote sustainability and awareness, ranging from eco-fish farms to how dumped plastic bags become a breeding area for mosquitos.
